Driving Podcast and My Top Five Solo/Side Projects
Thanks everyone for helping with the Driving Songs! Check out the podcast here.
So for next week we’re paying homage for those who want to break out of their pack and start something new and different. It’s My Top Five Solo/Side Projects! We’re not going to be picky about what constitutes a side project. Is every off shoot from Broken Social Scene a side project? We will allow it! So here are mine what are yours?
5. Stephen Malkmus
4. Feist
3. The Raconteurs
2. Frank Black
1. Gorillaz
1. The first song that popped into my head when I saw the Roald Dahl book cover was Paul McCartney and the Frog Chorus, which kinda constitutes a side project, so please play We All Stand Together!
2. Roger Taylor’s The Cross
3. Brian May’s Starfleet
4. Gorillaz (Dare)
5. The Raconteurs (Broken Boy Soldier)
Awwwww do play the frog We all stand together song!
Also agree with Feist!
1. The Good the Bad and the Queen
2. Jonny Greenwood’s “There will be blood” soundtrack
3. Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man
4. Mark Lanagan + Isobel Campbell….
I have to say, I’d totally second Gorillaz, Feist, and the Raconteurs. So to give a few different ones:
5. Justin Timberlake – Sexy Back (sorry… I had to do it)
4. John Lennon – Imagine
3. Ben Folds – Still Fighting It (or anything from Rockin’ the Suburbs or Songs for Silverman… basically everything post the five)
2. Natalie Merchant – San Andreas Fault
1. Wyclef Jean – Gone till November
Dude can I suggest for one of the next podcasts as theme :
Gym-Jogging in the beach topfive podcast
oups I already did the suggestion
1. In The Lines – Portastatic (Superchunk side project of Mac McCaughan)
2. Hot Girls – Headphones (Dazid Bazan of Pedro The Lion side project)
3. Comfy In Nautica – Panda Bear (Animal Collective)
4. Success – Iggy Pop (The Stooges)
5. Age Of Consent – New Order (I guess it’s SORT OF a Joy Division side project)
Kudos on the podcast
Gotta have something by Bjork:may I suggest Joga, or Sod Off
Gotten into the podcast lately (you can thank Roisin O’C), just catching up enough to make suggestions on time now.
I was going to contribute but Liz said exactly what I wanted to. It’s pretty freaky actually. Same order and everything.
5.Jape, Richie Egan of The Redneck Manifesto (Floating)
4.Handsome Furs, Dan Boeckner of Wolf Parade (Sing! Captain)
3.Silicon Teens, Daniel Miller’s side project to The Normal (Judy in Disguise/Let’s Dance)
2.Postal Service, Ben Gibbard or Death Cab (We Will Become Silhouettes)
1. Jarvis Cocker, Jarvis Cocker of Pulp! (Fat Children)
Two great suer-groups;
Reindeer section
Broken Social Scene
6th December from The Grey album by Dangermouse (the non-singing guy from Gnarls Barkley)… it’s the lyrics from Jay Z’s Black Album with the melodies from The Beatles White Album. It’s great.
Wear Sunscreen – Baz Lurhman. A surprisingly good song.
The Good the Bad and The Queen
And Morrissey. Cos Tom thinks I would suggest this! (actually he’s right, Moz is a great example of a solo act!)
And I’m gonna say Blue Monday or Temptation by New Order (just cos I wanna hear them!)
If you’re playing Wycelf (although not really a side project per se) please play 9-1-1, I love the guitar and Mary J Blige’s screaming in it!
I’ll second Jape- Floating for this one, also Animal Collective (seeing as they’re playing in Dublin in less than 2 weeks and I’m super excited!)- Grass or The Purple Bottle
5. Lou Barlow
4. Steve Winwood
3. Atlas Sound
2. Panda Bear
1. Jim O’Rourke
