Returning back to our indie roots, this week we’re looking for your Top Five Alternative Voices. By this I mean singers who sound unique and different in a good way. In a world of X-factors and Pop Idols, this week we’re looking for the people who can’t sing, at least not in a conventional sense, yet they deliver more emotion and identity to music than your average Backstreet Boy.

Here are My Top Five, what are yours?

5. Neutral Milk Hotel

4. EDIT Wolf Parade

3. The National

2. Tom Waits

1. Bright Eyes

  10. Leonard Cohen (you have to play “Tower of Song”, for that beautifully ironically self-depreciating lyric: “I was born with the gift of a golden voice”)

    Ian Brown (My Star)

  11. D’oh, reading through the comments I thought I was going to be the first one to say Dylan but Brian just beat me to it! (surprised Dylan hasn’t gotten more votes tho!)

Aside from that I’d have to reiterate some of the previous suggestions….

Waits (Downtown Train would be my suggested track!)
    Young (Neil, not Will!) 😉
Antony and the Johnsons – Fistful of Love (with Lou Reed) …. Please play this one Tom!

This is shaping up to be a great podcast!

  12. Oh, have to add ‘I Keep a Close Watch’ by John Cale and ‘These Days’ by Nico…. (Velvet Underground obviously being on my mind!)

And Kurt Cobain in general (love the gravelly voice). And Bowie (pretty alternative voice)…. okay, I’ll stop now

    Comment by Roisin | April 21, 2008 | Reply

  13. Yeah, I will put Davie Bowie and Nico (Velvet Underground) in my top5+2 list. Thorm if you put Antony and the Johnsons please play Fistful of Love (with Lou Reed).

  14. Just having a read of all the comments, this one seems to have caught everyone’s attention! I’m going to secong David Bowie, Neutral Milk Hotel (specifically King of Carrot Flowers Parts 2&3 as suggested by Norman),Zach Condon (so ridiculously young and talented it seems unfair) and just mention Smog as well.
Don’t envy trying to pull a top five out of this lot!
